Description

This volume is divided into four sections:

Ten poems from the radical eighteenth century newspaper the Sheffield Register, commentaries on those poems, an essay and then appendices. Whilst the poems stand reading alone, we recommend reading the collection chronologically, in order to appreciate the effect of their original serial publication.

The commentaries explore ideas and issues the poems engage with and offer interpretation on how they work. An essay describes how they came to be published at a time when government authouritie were at their most suspicious.

Finally, appendices present new transcripts of primary archival material to show that Sheffield citizens were prepared to defend their rights and their worth.
